Post Oopsla Tampa Event Group Four

Hillside Scholarships and Grants

For what?

  • student attendance at conferences
  • invited people at PLoP conference (travel expenses, conference fee)
  • special projects

Special Projects

  • Scope:
    • patterns-related
    • should be pursuant to the Hillside mission statement
    • to add to the quantity or quality of the patterns literature (appreciation and utilization)
      • example of adding to quantity – a synthesis project
      • examples of adding to quality – review body of patterns literature and refactor, a project that promotes the use of patterns, etc.

  • Proposal to Hillside must contain:
    1. ) budget
    2. ) motivation
    3. ) plan
    4. ) when and where it will be reported

  • Proposal must be short and succinct (example: 2 pages, single spaced)

  • When are proposals accepted (any time or only at specific times?)

  • Turnaround time must be specified and adhered to (grants officer must keep track of this)

  • Transparent – anyone can apply

  • Results of the work must be reported at a PLoP and/or some other patterns (see below)

  • If Hillside can’t fund, they may help the proposal writer funnel it to another appropriate place

To do this, Hillside needs:

  • a budget
  • money for grants and scholarships in the budget
  • general meeting (at a PLoP or OOPSLA) to create the budget
  • a grants officer
  • report from grants officer at the general meeting
