Hillside Scholarships and Grants
For what?
- student attendance at conferences
- invited people at PLoP conference (travel expenses, conference fee)
- special projects
Special Projects
- Scope:
- patterns-related
- should be pursuant to the Hillside mission statement
- to add to the quantity or quality of the patterns literature (appreciation and utilization)
- example of adding to quantity – a synthesis project
- examples of adding to quality – review body of patterns literature and refactor, a project that promotes the use of patterns, etc.
- Proposal to Hillside must contain:
- ) budget
- ) motivation
- ) plan
- ) when and where it will be reported
- Proposal must be short and succinct (example: 2 pages, single spaced)
- When are proposals accepted (any time or only at specific times?)
- Turnaround time must be specified and adhered to (grants officer must keep track of this)
- Transparent – anyone can apply
- Results of the work must be reported at a PLoP and/or some other patterns (see below)
- If Hillside can’t fund, they may help the proposal writer funnel it to another appropriate place
To do this, Hillside needs:
- a budget
- money for grants and scholarships in the budget
- general meeting (at a PLoP or OOPSLA) to create the budget
- a grants officer
- report from grants officer at the general meeting
