Suggestions to Hillside (US) for membership rules and their implementation

1. Board appoints membership chair, who maintains member list

  • Different organizations must have different membership chairs
  • Membership chairs should share data
  • Membership chair submits membership list to board

2. Clearly define rules for being an active/voting member in a given year

  • Future members need to ask to join

  • For the last two years, must have contributed to the community

    • Shepherded a paper
    • Took on administrative job
    • Played a role at an PLoP event
    • Is/was member of the board
    • Is honorary member
    • Declares intent to do a job

    • Honorary membership

      • Given for life by board
      • Can be withdrawn by board
      • Get senior pass, reduced fee at PLoP

    • Not a sufficient criterion

      • Wrote a pattern paper
      • Wrote a research paper on patterns

      • Open question: is having written a good patterns book a sufficient criterion
      • Open question: use stamp of approval for what papers/books to accept

3. Passive/non-voting membership

  • Managed by membership chair, same procedures, but no complicated criteria

  • Benefits of being a non-voting member

    • Gets information through mailing list
    • Better access to board/voting members

4. How/when to leave Hillside

  • Actively requests to step out
  • Does not reapply implies state of change from active to passive
  • Member violates statutes of Hillside

5. Advertise these changes to inform possible members

6. Put voting membership rules on the web (but not statutes, which only members get)
