Things that require even the slightest thought are bad - or at least they're bad in the eyes of most users. To solve this you have to think about the mindset of most users, accept it and cater to it. KISS, but KISS wrt the users, not wrt you.

A good rule of thumb I've found is that, every time you put a feature in your system that is not BleedingObvious, you double the amount of time it takes for a new user to accept your system.
