Hypertext Markup Language

Hypertext markup language (HTML) defines tags that can be inserted into ASCII text to control how it is formatted and otherwise processed by a remote web browser. There are a wide variety of tags, though all take on one of the following forms...

  • <tag parameter(s)=value(s)>
  • <tag parameter(s)=value(s)> enclosed text </tag>

There are different versions of HTML, both specialized versions that particular vendors use (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer) and standardized versions that World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) advocates. Some of these versions, and the details about them, are at http://www.w3c.org
