News Letters

These are scans of the W9YB newsletter for the 1965-66 school year. I may be missing one or two, but not sure. (The missing numbers in the series may or may not actually exist.)

I scanned them at 75 dpi resolution like you suggested, and as you said, they are quite readable. Some of the newsletters are blue-on-white ditto copies and others are black-on-white. I think some of them may have been mimeographed, but I don't remember for sure. (I remember doing mimeograph stencils for another club newsletter.) I saved the dittoes as 8-bit color to preserve the "ambience", and the black-and-white newsletters as black and white photographs to save a little file size.

Several of the newsletters refer to the "club project" 6 meter transceiver, which was a low-cost 5 W AM transmitter/superregenerative receiver 6 meter rig similar to a Heathkit "Sixer" (if you remember those). One of the newsletters includes the schematics. If you want to start a page on that "club project" I'll do a little writeup. Bud Simciak promoted the idea and I was one of the guys that built one. The superregen receiver was a bitch to debug but a great source of satisfaction when I got it working smoothly. I don't have any pictures, but I'm pretty sure I *do* still have the radio (out in the barn someplace). If I manage to turn it up I'll send you some pictures!

The 6 meter AM transceiver project never went anywhere because everybody was getting into 6 and 2 meter FM at the time and the "W9YB campus network" that Bud envisioned actually ended up on 52.525 FM. . . but that's another story. -- ?JohnSellers

We would love to host more newsletters. Scan your collection and send me a zip or write to me for help. Also, if you find particularly memorable articles among these pages let us know where to look. -- ?WardCunningham
