I enjoyed your license plate site. We are a family trying to visit all 50
states (please see our site at http://members.aol.com/cal1979) and we always
play the license plate game when we are on the road. Last year (when we
visited your fair city of Portland) we managed all fifty -- most of them at
Yellowstone Park. This is definitely the place for plate-spotting. -- Chris
Just wanted to say thank you for your web site. We are taking our 2
grandsons ages 6 & 8 on vacation this next week. We are traveling from
Arkansas to Canada. I copied each of your license plate photos and am
currently making them each a book(to keep them busy). Their mom is a
teacher and thought this was a great educational idea. I am anxious to

We live in Fort Collins, Colorado--home of Colorado State University.
It has taken about ten days to find all but four states liscence plates. We
have yet to spot Vermont, Kentucky, North and South Carolina. Best
locations are the student parking lots and streets close to campus where
student retals are located. -- Brenda

Nice site. I collect number plates, mainly Australian ones. There are only seven states here (rather large ones.. you think Texas is big!) Check out this site of Australian plates.

I was reviewing your check list for the states and noticed that Delaware is
missing. Didn't you know that while lots of companies are based in Delaware
for legal reasons no one actually lives there thus there are NO license
plates for this humble state!

We are a family who has visited USA five times. And every time we have tried
to bring a license plate back home to Sweden as a souvenir.
Last October we visited Massachusetts and Cape Cod but unfortunately we were
not able to find any license plates to bring with us. Do you know whom or
where we could turn to buy license plates?

I too have been keeping track of license plates, with my son Sam, just
driving around town to see how many we could find. We have been very
successful finding 25 in the first two weeks! (on our way to and from
soccer practice mainly). It is amazing to me that we can see so many
within a 20 mile radius! We have seen so many different
ones for our state (Utah) and several different ones for other states,
that we are just wondering if they all have several variations. I was so
happy to find your pictures to show my son (9yrs old) what they look
like, he's hoping it will help spot the rest.

We travel about twice a Year. Our rules for spotting out of state plates is that the car has to be
moving, you can use the rear view mirrors, and cannot claim a state twice. (only one person can
have Missouri, The first person that spots Kansas owns Kansas the whole trip, for the day, etc.)

I found your website through google.com. You have finally put my mind at ease. I recently saw a license plate with a bucking bronco on it, but couldn't get close enough to see to which state it belonged. I now know, thanks to you, that it is Wyoming. It has been driving me crazy for days!

I recently started taking pictures of licence plates to keep myself amused while walking through my neighborhood (I walk 6 blocks to work everyday). So far, I've collected 20 with no effort! It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one who does this. Thanks for the inspiration! -- Matt
My daughter and I play the plate game every month. We start at the beginning of the month and have until the end of the month to obtain all 50 states plus Ontario and Quebec. We also use all others as "Write-ins" . The only rules are you can't use a semi if the plate doesn't match the door and you can't use U-Hauls, or moving trucks. But we are amused on a regular basis. And have seen many unusual and interesting plates. -- RK
My son and I started keeping track of all the plates from different states about three years ago. I started this to keep him busy during a trip from St. Louis to the bottom of Missouri. I became addicted. I watch for plates all the time. I have found that most of the plates have changed in just three years. Delaware is the hardest to find. I have only seen one in the three years we have been doing it. I also told my son not to expect to see Hawaii. We saw a diesel hauling around eight cars all of them with Hawaiian plates. Needless to say we still count them. -- Cindy
Great job on the photos of all 50 states.
But you have photographed merely the state plates and overlooked the many nations included within our borders. Have you ever run across any plates from Native American tribes? Many of them now claim "nation" status, as many plates say "Cherokee Nation" or "Caddo Nation," etc. So now you must try to photograph all of these! Best place to start is Oklahoma; there are thirty different tribes/bands/nations which issue their own plates; Minnesota, Wisconsin, and S. Dakota have about a half-dozen more (each), and the Navajo Nation in Arizona has one. A lot of folks don't even know these plates exist. Here in Tennessee there are no tribal plates. My wife and I flew to Calif. this summer on vacation, but on our way home we spent a couple days in Oklahoma, tracking down the thirty different nations -- found 'em all, but the last one was tough; saw only one Modoc passenger car plate. It was a lot of fun, but you have to go where they are; they don't seem to travel much.

I live in Oregon but I had business trips to Baltimore, Charlotte and Fort Wayne that year. -- Ward
My collections are strictly visual. My little game is to see how long it
takes me to see all 50 states while I travel within the state of Florida, over
the space of one calender year. I've been doing this for about 15 years. The
hardest state to spot is, of course, Hawaii. I've missed seeing it a number of
times. The only state I've missed seeing in any given year, other than Hawaii,
is North Dakota. Living in Florida, Alaska is fairly easy, especially in the

My parents, when we were young, to pass the time
started us playing this game. I'm now 31 and I still
play it everytime my wife and I go on a trip. We live
in Arkansas and the usual suspects are hard to find.
Hawaii, Delaware, Rhode Island and Connecticut. And,
for me over the years, West Virginia has been a tough

Really loved your site. Been collecting license plates forever...both real and those just written down as I've passed them on the road. It used to be fun collecting vanity plates but now everybody has one and they're pretty common. -- Sandy
I used to live in Idaho and from time to time would venture over to Yellowstone National Park. I kid you not, I have seen plates from every state in the Union and every province of Canada but Nunavut on the small, two lane highway to West Yellowstone. -- Dave
Just wanted to give you a license plate update from Hawaii. It took me about 2 years to find and photograph all 50 states (+ DC) in Hawaii. The four it took the longest to find were: West Virginia, Rhode Island, Delaware, and last but not least South Dakota. -- Chaitanya
