logoServer Facts and Statistics

This site is hosted on an inexpensive PC clone running BSDI UNIX. We maintain a 24-hour a day modem connection to the internet through RAINet, a regional provider. The same machine serves as a gateway from/to our local network so that all our computers have continuous network access.

The configuration has worked well as a vehicle for observing and participating in the internet revolution. There are advantages to having web pages served from equipment under your own administrative control, especially when one is inclined to experiment with servers.

Bandwidth considerations are never far from mind. We've found that the care we take in page design is appreciated by all visitors, including those on well connected networks, but especially those visiting from home via modem. I've been asked several times how I make my site so much faster than big sites like Microsoft or Wired.

Of course it helps that the server is usually idle. Most of our pages are of a public service nature with intentionally narrow audiences. We have not sought listings at sites that would bring us heavy traffic. We feel that word of mouth leads to visits that are more likely to be judged valuable to the visitor. Still, usage has grown steadily over the three years we have been in operation.

At the time of this writing we have been running several second-generation wiki servers that either don't log or don't keep logs in the same place as our standard server. Their traffic is modest in comparison to the above numbers. But the above no longer represents the total web content we serve to the internet.
