Stitched Panoramas

We've been taking casual panoramic pictures of WikiCreekPond for the better part of a year now. But after running into GigaPan photographer, AndrewJohnstone, and seeing his awesome image of BurningMan, we've acquired a renewed interest in digitally stiched panoramas.

Here is our first attempt, a shot of the pond from a point slightly north of our usual camera position. We're looking East-South-West so were looking towards that position.

Some things to note:

  • I might have been smarter to use a portrait orientation so as to acquire more vertical field of view.
  • The thumbnail logic used by this site doesn't understand pictures this wide.
  • My rotation was not around the lens center so I have parallax issues with foreground objects.
  • I used the HuginSticher, which installed and ran with few hitches. One exception, it couldn't figure out lens parameters from the metadata so I just guessed 30 degree field of view.

We've devised a mechanism for both improving and repeating specific panoramas. We've dubbed this FixpointPanorama.
