I found an old bowling pin with "The wa3nak Award" written in permanent marker and several years/callsigns on it. It was tucked in a corner of the West Tower in the Purdue Memorial Union. I was just wondering if you could tell us the history of it. -- AndrewLarson, KC0MSV http://c2.com/wiki/wa3nak/award.jpg Wow, that takes me back. When I was at Purdue in the mid '70s I was a member of the Amateur Radio Club. I had a 2 meter handheld, back in the days when that meant a box about the size and half the weight of the bricks that the Student Union building is made of, with a belt clip. I generally carried it with me everywhere I went. One night a week (Sunday I believe) the cafeterias for the dorms were closed and the whole W9YB crowd (about 10 of us) used to go down the street and have pizza and then go bowling. Because I used to bowl with this enormous HT clipped on my belt I was accused of trying to radio control the bowling ball and the award was originally for the first person to do this. I have no idea where it went after that, and if you get any answers from any of the other calls listed on it I would love to know what you find out. -- MikeBevan, WA3NAK For more photos, see http://c2.com/wiki/wa3nak -- WardCunningham See also SundayPizzaBowling |
